Scottish First Minister John Swinney has confirmed his commitment to deliver an additional £100 million annually for culture by 2028/29, and to pilot a basic income for artists scheme by 2031.
In the first Programme for Government (PfG) since the election, the SNP said it would continue to “protect and enhance” Scotland’s “internationally recognised culture sector”, with an additional £50m annual uplift pledged for culture by 2031.
By the end of the parliament, it said it would pilot a Scottish Artists Minimum Income, as promised in its manifesto, alongside “delivering all our other commitments to the sector”.
Culture Secretary Màiri McAllan told The Herald she wanted to “move quickly” to get the basic income for artists pilot up and running, inspired by a similar initiative in Ireland.
