Who We Are

About BICN

Basic Income Canada Network (BICN) is a unique national organization dedicated to ensuring everyone can meet basic needs and live with dignity.

We reflect varied perspectives because there are many reasons for a basic income. At the same time, we are geared towards feasible policy solutions that make sense for Canada. We are respected leaders in shaping the public awareness and conversations that will get us there.

We work alongside the growing number of individuals and groups within the wider basic income movement, many of them in our supporter and donor base, and with allies that have related interests and mandates.

We are a catalyst for new activity and a trusted resource for anyone wanting to learn more, to be part of this effort, or to have an informed say about a critical societal and economic issue.

Founded in 2008, BICN is a registered non-profit, non-partisan organization. Our board of directors come from all walks of life and a circle of advisors adds even more diversity of expertise and ideas. As an affiliate of the international Basic Income Earth Network, we are connected to networks of people around the world as well as across Canada.

What we stand for

01

Dignity

We want a basic income implemented in Canada, one that is grounded in principles of universality, adequacy, non-conditionality, autonomy, dignity and economic and gender equality, and that works in synergy with public services.

We stand with people in Canada calling on their governments to make basic income a reality.

We build and expand networks that connect individuals, institutions and groups from Canada and all around the world. For us, it’s essential to foster a supportive community of people whose commitment, expertise and action are making a difference in the fight for basic income.
Through presentations, our website, social platforms, mainstream media and conversations with family, friends, colleagues, politicians and others we are building a strong foundation of support.

We research, analyze and develop policy options for Canada in order to provide guidance and encourage government action.
At BICN, we use conferences, webinars and other means to support and help keep basic income proponents aware of new developments in research, policy and analysis, experiences in pilot projects, activist strategies, government decisions and more. Settings that enable mutual learning, and strategizing are essential to the movement.
