We’re long overdue for a serious conversation about a guaranteed basic income.
When Doug Ford’s Progressive Conservatives came to power in Ontario in 2018, the first campaign promise they broke — quickly overshadowed by the Greenbelt — was to cancel a basic income pilot project structured to run for two more years.
Universal basic income (UBI) is an idea that generates a lot of buzz in anti-poverty circles, and scorn from the bootstraps crowd. It replaces other forms of social assistance with a guaranteed income, no strings attached, giving people more money to live on without clawing back earned income. By relieving the constant stress of making ends meet, UBI creates opportunities for people to upgrade their education, retrain, or earn more money without fear of losing benefits.
