AT least three US cities are offering residents a chance at free monthly checks worth as much as $1,200 this year.
The money comes as part of guaranteed income programs, which provide low-income Americans a chance to improve their financial situations.
Eligible participants have an easier time paying for expenses like housing, food, and transportation, in hopes of lowering poverty rates.
It’s important to note that the very first guaranteed income program was launched just a few years ago in 2019 in Stockton, California, about 83 miles east of downtown San Francisco, per Smart Cities Dive.
As of the end of last year, more than 150 cities have launched their own.
Experts who observed the effect of the payments on participants over the years have come to differing conclusions about their effectiveness.
