‘This is a story of Hamilton:’ Film highlights impact of cancelled basic income pilot

The “what if” question still looms large for Jessie Golem six years after the province cancelled a groundbreaking universal basic income experiment.

Back in 2017, Golem was one of about 1,000 Hamiltonians receiving guaranteed monthly payments under the unique program meant to offer a financial safety net to low-income residents. It allowed the struggling Hamilton artist to catch her breath financially after years of juggling up to four jobs at a time to get by.

That brief relief — and a fledgling plan to start her own business — were both torpedoed in 2018 when the incoming Tory government abruptly cancelled what was supposed to be a three-year pilot program.
