‘I see hungry children every day’: Smiths Falls council supports basic income by narrow margin

Smith Falls Record News

Smiths Falls council supported a resolution to endorse a universal basic income by a slim margin.

“We know the impact of poverty on our community is deep and broad,” said Mayor Shawn Pankow, who brought the issue before council’s committee of the whole for discussion on Monday, March 25.

“It has a deeply negative effect on both physical and mental health and leaves a legacy of hopelessness and lost opportunity that extends for generations.”

The topic of basic income was brought to committee of the whole following a presentation by Rob Rainer, Tay Valley reeve and chair of Lanark Basic Income Network, who previously presented at the Smiths Falls for All Committee.

“The committee was very intrigued,” said Pankow.
