If Democrats retake Congress next year they promise to feud with President Trump and investigate his every move. But it’s also possible that Democrats lure the President into more spending and bad policy, as it did in the last two years of his first term. Pay attention to a recent bipartisan bill to expand the child tax credit.
A House bill introduced this month would remove the $2,500 income requirement to start collecting the benefit. We say benefit because up to $1,700 of the $2,200 per child credit is available in a check to those without income tax liability. It’s more a welfare check than a tax credit. The bill would start to offer the credit at $1 of income. Sponsors include Democrat Chris Pappas of New Hampshire and Republican Carol Miller of West Virginia, among others.
