KINGSTON — City council is calling on the federal and provincial governments to raise social assistance rates, increase funding for school food programs and establish a guaranteed basic income to combat food insecurity.
Council approved a motion Tuesday night declaring a food insecurity emergency and called on upper levels of government to begin considering the issue in policy decisions.
“We’re doing all we can as a city to address food insecurity, and it’s not enough,” said Kingscourt-Rideau Dist. Coun. Brandon Tozzo. “It’s an emergency.”
